Those who know me (and for those who don't, hi, Stranger!) know that I'm not a fan of PDA, or Public Displays of Affection. Is it cause I'm a prude? Maybe, but really it's because it's about respect. It's kind of like modesty. It's about respecting yourself and respecting others. When you're modest, you don't have to work to get people's respect. I feel the same about PDA.

Physical contact is the language of emotion, and what does this language say?
Hand holding says, "I like you" and "I'm in a relationship with this person"
Kissing says, "I'll miss you/I missed you", "I love you", or "I want you"
There are definitely appropriate places and times to say these messages (feel free to hold hands anytime), however PDA is more like screaming these messages at the rest of us. Let's layout some guidelines.

List of Appropriate Kissing:
-When your spouse leaves for or arrives from work or being gone all day.
-On your wedding day.
-During a photo shoot.*
-In your own home.
-During a romantic date.
-At a romantic location like the beach at sunset.
List of Inappropriate Kissing:
-Anywhere people are eating.
-In someone else's home.
You would think the inappropriate list would go without saying, but they have both happened to me with multiple couples. And please remember, if you are in a public place, limit your kiss to one that says, "I love you". I hope you know what that means.

*The catalyst for this rant was that I received a wedding announcement from a college friend in the mail recently. I won't embarrass this person by saying names because they certainly aren't the only ones I've seen do this, but on the announcement was a kissing picture, among others. Now I am all for the evolution of wedding announcements, but in the joy of being able to print words on top of pictures and only putting things in one envelope let us not forget the purpose of the wedding announcement--to declare your coming nuptials. The picture is traditionally included so your parents' friends can see who of the couple they are supposed to know, and to give a sneak peak of the physical appearance of your future spouse. In order to accomplish this, you need to see both of the couple's faces. When you take a kissing picture, you don't see either of the couple's faces, plus we just read that you are getting married and since this is the 21st century, we assume you love each other, so we don't need to see evidence of it.
So please, just pick ONE nice picture for your wedding announcement. It is just going to end up in the trash, after all. But don't let that stop you from taking hundreds of other cute pictures, including kissing pictures, and printing them up and hanging them all over your house. It's important to be reminded every once in awhile of the love that started out your relationship. And your children will appreciate the evidence that your relationship started with mutual affection. Just don't hang your kissing pictures where I have to stare at them when I eat, or don't invite me over for dinner. Either way.
