You Can't Always Get What You Want

...But then again, sometimes you can. And isn't great when it happens? I think it's happened to me like four times in my life. First, when my crush asked me to Prom junior year, though, now that I think about it, doesn't really count because I didn't really spend that much time wanting that to happen. Maybe a brief fantasy here and there, but I never considered it an actual possibility, ... so maybe just three times.

First, when my now husband asked me to Prom in high school. I liked him so badly and I really wanted him to ask me to a dance so I could show him how good I clean up and he would fall madly in love with me. Okay, so that last part didn't happen until several years later, but I did clean up good.

Second, getting my now husband to fall madly in love with me and marry me. I had to become completely uninterested in him before this happened, but in the end, my high school fantasy came true.

Third, going to London for a study abroad. I set this as a "goal" for myself when I entered college. I use quote marks because I never thought I'd really be able to do it, but then I did. And it was one of the best experiences of my life.

Now, these three experiences are unique because they weren't just goals I set for myself. In the case of my husband, I had no control over his thoughts and feelings, and so can not really consider those as goals. Goals are things you actually expect to be able to do, you just need a little boost, or baby steps, or whatever to get there. Those three experiences were dreams come true because they weren't things that I ever thought I'd be able to do.

Well, yet another dream has come true for me. (And Mo, you can do it too by the time you're 30. Let's chat and I'll share my new philosophies.) I am in a play. I'm back on the wagon, and this time, for the first time, I got a lead. And not just any lead, the lead I auditioned for. I had abandoned the hope of ever getting a lead in a play while I was in high school. This abandonment of hope stayed with me through college. I desperately wanted to get the lead in a play, don't get me wrong, I just never thought I could because I'm too tall, I only get cast for my dancing, there's too much politics in theater . . . . But one of my life long fantasies is fulfilled. My audition was very different from Morgan's. (I'm pretty sure you can scroll down and find what I'm talking about because you all read Morgan's blog too, I know.) I went into an audition, and based on nothing else but my talent and wow factor, I got a lead. And I auditioned more than a week before they cast it, with no call backs. Granted, it is a community theater production, but you gotta start somewhere, and now that I've had a taste of this dream, I think I could do it again.

So here's to dreams come true.

My first dresses

I don't remember my first dress, but it was probably a hand-me-down from my sister when she was a baby. But that's okay because baby clothes are meant to be hand-me-downs. What was sad was when I got her hand-me-downs later. Not that I didn't like her clothes, but I am what is traditionally called a "late bloomer", and though me and my sister are about the same height now, she got her height mostly by sixth grade, whereas I didn't start growing until after seventh and continued on until my Junior year of high school, or sometime around then. So with her already two years older, most of her clothes didn't really fit me. So I don't know where I got some of my clothes from.

But I do remember that I have always loved dresses. There was one sun dress I had in pre-school, so I was four, and it was blue with bright balloons on it. The balloons were red and yellow. It was smocked in the front and had straps about 1" thick. I remember this dress particularly because the one time I wore it to class, I got really self-conscious. I think that was the first time I really thought about dressing for modesty. Anyway, sadly I didn't really wear that dress much after that. And every time I looked at it in my closet, it made me sad. And my little sister didn't wear it much.

I also remember this dress my cousin gave me. It was black with a paisley design and a white lace collar. I wore that thing until it was a little too small for me. I thought it was the prettiest thing I'd ever seen when she gave it to me, and I couldn't believe I was so lucky. That was the best hand-me-down ever. I even wore it for a family picture, so it is immortalized on my parents' wall.

Hmmm, dresses. I should wear them more often . . .

My Mother's Dresses

So, I've been spending time at work (see post below) reading Erin's Dress a Day blog (her May 14th post to be exact). And thinking about my own memories of dresses and my mother.

Let's preface this vignette by saying that I love dresses, I always have. Maybe I'll blog about my memories of my first dresses, but not today. I love wearing dresses now. Okay, skirts mostly, but I haven't sewn in awhile. Maybe some day I'll have a sewing room, or something in the realm of furniture so that I won't have to sew on the floor. Right now, my sewing quarters are located in the basement of my old and scary house. I could think of at least three other places in the house I'd rather sew including my disgusting kitchen floor and my claustrophobically small office/library/junk storage room. But the basement is where I will be.

Anyway, on to the vignette. I remember a dress in my mother's closet when I was little that used to intrigue me. It was peach and long and flow-y with lace on the neck. I think the color would have looked wonderful on my mother, and I always wondered why she never wore it. I found out much much later (hey, sometimes I'm slow, remember how it took me 12 years to get the tarapaper joke?) that it was a bridesmaid dress from her little sister's wedding. She wore it shortly after having me. In fact, there is a picture in my scrapbook of me as a baby held by my mother with my older sister sitting next to me with a corsage on her wrist. On second thought, maybe my sister was holding me, and my mother wasn't even in said picture, but then again, there's got to be a picture like that somewhere. The facts in the case remain, however, that it was the bridesmaid's dress, and I was a baby. I put two and two together (about the fact that it was a bridesmaid's dress and the wedding and all) because of that picture (whatever one it is) and the wedding pictures of my aunts wedding that my grandma has hung on the wall of her basement. I saw my mom in the pretty dress and discovered where she got it. The question of why she never wore it still haunted me. I didn't realize at the time that my mom had very few occasions to wear fancy dresses, what with raising us and all. And also, my mom isn't really into the whole dressing up thing like I am, and would have been terribly uncomfortable in the dress out somewhere.

As far as other dresses go, I remember sitting on a pew with my mother at church on Sundays and paying very close attention to her dresses. I liked the patterns that were harder to figure out. I would trace the paisley and try to find the order in the design. I also knew which dresses were her favorites because she wore them a lot. I also remember sitting on her lap and touching the underside of her chin. It was my favorite place to touch because it was so soft, like silk soft. I'm sure my mother thought I was pointing out a double chin she was worried about, but I just liked the texture.

Ohh, childhood.

Guilt v. Boredom

Not to ruin the big stand-off for you, but boredom won. Obviously. Why obviously? because I'm posting. So the boredom at work won. But is guilt just giving up and playing dead?

Well . . . have you ever known guilt to just give up? Has guilt ever stopped fighting a losing battle? Eventually, yes guilt does stop fighting. But it hasn't given up on me yet. "It's just a flesh wound", it keeps yelling, flopping around on the ground on it's stumps.

Actually, I give in a lot of the time because of guilt. It's a very strong motivator for me. However, the absolute lack of things to do this week (I finished every conceivable project I have been saving up for boring days two days ago), I find myself reading a lot of blogs, writing blogs (obviously) and organizing things that don't need to be organized. Hey, I never said I stopped being OCD just because I was bored.

So, looks like you can look forward to posts, yes actually honest-to-goodness posts on my blog for the next few days (hopefully not weeks, please, please, not weeks I'm pulling out eyebrow hairs for crying out loud!). I guess there's good news for someone in all this . . .

Goodbye Sun, I guess I never saw you that much anyway

All opposed to the switch from Daylight Savings Time, please say "aye".

I can't tell you how messed up my body feels now. I wake up and feel like I've overslept and like I should be somewhere already because it's so light outside. And in my personal opinion, there are few things worse in this world than when you wake up late. That initial panic, that feeling of stupidity, the horrible knot in your stomach that says there is absolutely nothing you can do about it now, and the overwhelming desire for a time machine to get back those 2-60 minutes that would make all the difference. There is nothing to compare. So fighting off that feeling every morning is a little much.

Then, there's the sunset. I am all about sunsets, I just like them to happen after I get home from work. I feel like it's so late when I leave and it's completely dark outside. Like somehow I've been punished and had to work late for whatever reason. But no, it's really the right time to leave. I just get to feel punished by the sun. And then I get home and feel like I can't do anything because it's too late. I don't want to start a project and not be able to get through it before I have to go to bed. It cuts down on my productivity considerably.

So goodbye Sun. I'll miss you. I wish I saw you more, but I guess it wouldn't matter because you're too weak for me to enjoy any warmth from you anyway. I never really saw you as it was. But that doesn't mean we didn't have a good relationship. I'll call you sometime . . .

What is Tripod

I got a few comments about my last post, and by a few I mean one ("hi Tea and Ryan"!). But hey, when you only have like 5 readers, 20% of readers leaving comments counts as a few.

So for those of you whom I haven't introduced Tripod to, let me just say sorry in advance since, obviously they are pulling all of their videos and so you won't get the full experience. But, go here , here (not as good as the live version, sorry) and here then tell me what you think. There are also some credits from the ABC show they did on YouTube so look at the related links and get them while they are still around. I think they are hilarious, and also very musical and slightly funny looking, which adds to their funniness. Anyway, enjoy. (But only partially since they don't have as many videos now.) Oh and go here to listen to the song that was stuck in my head. Though it doesn't make as much sense without hearing "Lingering Dad" first.

Tripod videos

Where have the Tripod videos gone? All I can find is lots and lots of their song "Make You Happy", which granted is a fabulous song and the reason I fell in love with them in the first place, but doesn't really help me when all I want to hear is "Lingering Dad". I guess I shouldn't say 'hear' because as with most comedy, 'seeing' is an important part of any comedic act. And though I found the audio for the part I was looking for on their MySpace page, it just wasn't the same.

This upset me so much that I dreamed about it last night. I had a shopping dream, which frequently happens to me. They are never fun shopping dreams, because I am never able to find what I'm looking for. Either the stores have nothing cute or nothing in my size or are closed or something to prevent me to find what I'm looking for. Which is normally dresses. Or fabric. I think this dream might mirror my conscious frustration with shopping where I have similar problems. Normally only the first two though, stores aren't normally closed. Well, in this version of the shopping dream, I was with my sister and we were looking for dresses and we found some to try on but the dressing room didn't exist and to hunt for it we were sent into the creepy basement of the store. Anyway, she got dresses and I didn't because I was unwilling to stay in the basement. And sometime during the dream, I related to her my frustration about the removal of all the Tripod videos.

It makes me very sad. No more YouTube, no Google Video, no Yahoo, not even ABC australia which is where some of them originally aired. And the even sadder part is that even if I order a DVD from them, it has to ship from Australia and won't arrive forever.

Wo is me.

Diploma Story

Morgan's blog has inspired me to share my own diploma story.

So I walked early for my graduation. I didn't finish my classes until August, but I walked in April because I wanted the hoopla. What can I say, I'm a middle child. And it was sad because my name isn't even in the program. *sniff*

Anyway, I knew I wouldn't get my diploma until after August, but having never graduated from college before, I didn't know when to expect that. Then I got engaged and so did my sister so I had other things to worry about. Finally, in September I start thinking, hmm, I should probably have my diploma some time around now. So I checked my college website and find out that my diploma hadn't been shipped because there was a fine on my account. Well I looked at my account and sure enough, there was a $17 charge in there.

Now I can understand if I hadn't paid a parking ticket or had library fines or had missed some graduation fee or something, but that would have been the extent of the fines I would have accrued. But the account profile on the website divided charges into categories and parking tickets and the like had a separate category, whereas this charge was listed under 'Miscellaneous'. Confusing to me, to say the least. So I called the college and found out that the answer to the mystery was an answer to another mystery.

I worked for the college my senior year and one of my last pay checks was more than I thought it was supposed to be. I wasn't sure what to make of it, but deposited it in my account, like always. Turns out, they over paid me, by $17 and some change. So I had to pay them for their mistake in my favor in order to get my diploma. Which, by the way, still took them more than a month to get to me.

But on a happy note, looking online to find out why I hadn't received my diploma is how I found out that I graduated Cum Laude. You miss these things when you walk early and your name isn't on the program.

Season Premiers

I thought in honor of Season Premier week, I would start a series I like to call "Shows that Should Not be on the Air". Or "Shows that Should have Cut and Run Seasons Ago". Take your pick.

The first show that comes to mind is "ER". Before I start into my schpeal, I would to state for the record that I just barely did research on this on IMDB and am not a viewer. At least I haven't been in at least 5 years.

"ER" started in 1994. 1994 people!! It has been going on for 13 years. I was appalled that it has really been that long. Enough is enough people. Their cast is dropping like flies. I don't know the real turnaround rate for e.r. doctors, but if the show is anything to go by, it's not that long. The only cast member who has even come close to sticking around is Maura Tierney and she's only been on since 1999. Still a long time, but the point being all of the original cast members have cut and run and some are doing much better things with their time. Maybe Maura is scared that there is nothing out there waiting, but really, if you never quit, you'll never know, right? And the longer you stay there, the more people will type cast you from your roll on "ER".

NBC keeps pushing and pushing "ER" with big, silly promotions. They put in on Thursdays after their big comedy line up, probably hoping that someone somewhere will just be too lazy to turn the channel to something more popular, like "Grey's Anatomy".

I personally have had enough of the nighttime-hospital-soaps. And I would really like to know, is anyone out there still watching "ER"? And why does the network keep picking it up?

Top 10 for Driving

I drive a lot for work, so I've had a bit of experience in the last year with a few good drivers and a whole lot of bad drivers. And here's what I see as the worst driving faults. Bare in mind that I am inherently polite, so most of my pet peeves involve rudeness. However, I could rant about this topic for awhile, so if you would like to add to this list, feel free.

10- Not watching for Pedestrians.
I'm frequently a pedestrian for work as well, and nothing is sadder than almost getting hit by a car turning left or right and not watching for pedestrians. Because believe it or not, a pedestrian would not win in an accident. And hearing about pedestrian/car accidents makes me really sad, and very cautious as a driver and a walker. Also, for those who don't think this should make the list, I once got rear ended by a jerk in a truck because I was stopping for a pedestrian who had the right of way. (Then the guy had the nerve to ask me if I was on my cell phone!! I didn't even own one at the time. Poop face!)

9- Causing Gridlock.
I know the light says green and you've been waiting so long to get through this intersection, but PLEASE for the love of all that is holy, wait and make sure your giant SUV is going to actually fit through the intersection. That way, and this is a hard concept to grasp I'm sure, the perpendicular traffic will be able to get through so they won't block the intersection, then more people who have been waiting in the same line as you will be able to get through on the next light.

8- Talking on your Cell Phone while Driving.
As much of a poop face as that truck driver who rear ended me was, cell phone driving is actually a problem. Here's a thumb rule: if you can signal for all of your turns and keep up with traffic, then you can talk on your phone while you drive. If not, don't talk. Honestly, few conversations can't wait until your drive is over. And if it couldn't wait, it won't be very long. It's not worth your life or someone else's, is it?

7- Running Red Lights.
Contrary to popular belief, yellow lights do not mean speed up so the three cars behind you can sneak their way through this light, too. There are really few excuses for people now because of the nifty crosswalk signs that are being installed in more and more places. They have the little countdown for how long you have left to cross the street. Well, what do you think those are counting down? How long the green light will last. So if you just look at the crosswalk sign, you can see how much time you have to make it through the intersection. And I know that yellow lights are safety nets when there's just not enough room to slow down in time, but you can prep for them. And yes, the car behind you might get mad and pass you at the next opportunity, but it's not your fault that they are ungrateful to you for keeping them safe. Also, red lights are sometimes the only time for the poor cars who turn left without a green arrow to make it through, so if seven cars run the red, then those left-turners have to wait until it's been green for opposing traffic for awhile before they can turn. And that just slows everyone down. So don't run red lights.

6- Speeding.
I know that 5 over is acceptable and most cops won't pull you over for it and that's fine. But I just want everyone to know that speed limits aren't just arbitrary. There's a good reason for that 25 mph or 35 mph for that matter. And there's a huge difference between going 10 over in those areas and 10 over on the freeway. So if you are going to speed, speed on the highways. That's fine. But once you get off the freeway, you better not fly at 55 down my 35mph street (which a lot of people do). And don't get mad at me when I am going the speed limit. Like I said, there's a reason it is what it is.

5- Not Using Turning Signals.
That nob off you steering wheel isn't just for show. And I know there are jerks out there that won't let you in if you signal, but I will. And plenty of other nice people will, too. And if you are planning on making a turn that is not with the layout of the road, or intuitive to other drivers (yes, this includes inside parking lots), then you need to signal. I don't know about you, but I try to avoid accidents whenever I can, and this is really simple and easy way to do it, so why not? Let's stop trying to make people mad.

4- Tailgating.
This is mostly a problem due to #6, but tailgating can be bad even in bad traffic. Here's another thumb rule: if a dog darted out in front of the car in front of you, would you be able to stop in time? There are sudden stops even on the freeway, on occasion, so please maintain the proper and safe distance. Especially since I'm not the only driver who has been rear ended multiple times for no fault of there own (like the pedestrian story) and is slightly paranoid about the drivers behind me.

3- Ignoring Road Signs.
This goes for anything from "no left turns" to "no parking until after 9 AM", both of which I see violated frequently. And also on the carpool lanes, the "don't cross the double white lines" signs posted every 2 miles are not there for their own amusement. I know the slammin' music in your car is distracting, but don't forget what you are really doing, and you need to be able to read to get a license so use that skill, for crying out loud. And if you read a sign, follow it.

2- 4-way Stops.
Let me explain the 4-way stop philosophy since so many of you obviously don't understand. Let's say for example, a light goes out on a busy three lane road, thus turning this intersection into a 4-way stop. Let's say that the intersecting road has two lanes and all roads have a left-turn lane. Thus when all traffic stops we have 14 cars at the intersection. The cars who reached the intersection first go first in a normal 4-way, but in these situations, normally the biggest road goes first, so the six cars from the 3 lane street would go (that's one car per lane) and one right turner if that applies, then one left turner. Then the four cars from the 2 lane street would go (again ONE from each lane) then the left turns. And so one. Now if these rules are followed and only ONE car goes at a time, 4-way stops can actually go pretty fast. If you have questions about 4-way stops, please ask. If not me, someone with driving experience. And don't try to sneak in as a 2nd car, I don't care how long you've been waiting.

1- Merging.
Despite the fact that merging is not nearly as complicated as 4-way stops, it is the biggest problem I've seen on the road. Mostly I think this is because people are rude and selfish. Now, the ideal merging, of course, is the same as an ideally choreographed diagonal crossing of people. When the two lines meet, a person from the right line ends up between two people from the left line. So no person from the left line is standing behind another person from the left line when the whole process is done. So in a driving situation, every car would let in one car and then everyone would merge. Now this only works when the people who have to merge don't zoom up to the very point where their lane ends and then wait for the cars who have stopped to make room for them. If you see that your lane is ending, you should signal as soon as possible while there's room and patience to let you in. Don't make merging difficult. I will go out of my way to not let you in if you have left the long line cars accommodating the merging lane, and sped off to the point where the lane ends just to get ahead a few cars. If you do that, you are a jerk, and you should wait until your original spot in line has passed before you can get in. And I hope that no one lets you in and makes you and the other jerks wait just because you didn't think you had to. Because you're special. Like a little snowflake. Just like the rest of us.

So, as you see, it all comes down to politeness. I know in our society, thinking about other people is a rare and often frightening occurrence, but it we all did it, life would be better, if for no other reason than driving would be better. And yes, I'm a hypocrite because sometimes I get frustrated in traffic and do the things that make me mad. However, I never violate #1, 2, and 3 on principle.

Not a good idea

No really, I don't think it is. This is fax my firm recieved for a website that will apparently write you a prescription for any drugs you want. Then ship it to you overnight. Now with all the sickos on the internet already, do we really think this is a good idea? Or legitamate? Here it a link about it for more info . . . if you're curious. (Cause I know I am) Honestly, what is the internet coming to?

I've been tagged

By Erin to share 7 things people don't know about me. I can only think of 1, so the other 6 are some of the bizarre goals I have for my life.

Things You Don't Know About Me:

1- I do not know how to whistle. This is because when I was little I decided I could either learn to whistle, or learn to wink (why I couldn't do both, I have no idea. Maybe I only wanted to look silly practicing one or the other for a very limited period of time). And because of some embarrassing experiences, I decided to learn to wink. Mostly the embarrassment consisted of someone like a family member winking at me, and my only response being to blink really hard. I thought that was stupid. So, at any rate, I never learned to whistle and I feel very foolish practicing now. Also, I can only wink really well with one eye. I can wink with my other one now, if pressed, but for years, I could only do one. I just practiced with my left eye first. I think I intended to get around to the other one, but I was so happy to be able to wink when I got one eye down that I just stopped.

2- I have, from the age of at least 8, wanted to be the voice of an animated character in a full-length movie. When I was little, it was a Disney movie because when I was little Disney were the only ones making animated movies. But now I think I'd be happy with any animated movie. Only I'm a little sad because in the good old days, animated movies were musicals and the characters themselves sang. Now there's music from other artists in a soundtrack mode. And let's face it, one of the big reasons to be an animated star was to be able to sing.

3- I hope to one day have the definitive Jane Austen movie collection. This means every version of her books put on film. And I suppose the new movie coming out about her will probably be in there too. I have a few movies already, and an only moderately large wishlist on Amazon. This is because there are a lot of BBC versions of her books that just aren't available, at least here in the US.

4- I hadn't really put this one into words until I had already done it (yes, a goal accomplished, I know *applause*) but I had always wanted to eat a meal entirely with my hands. And not just hamburger and fries, but medieval style with a big hunk of meat and a foamy stein and all that good stuff. And let me tell you, it was really fun. And it felt really good to cross off a goal.

5-I would like to one day write a book. This is bizarre for me because a) I have at least 3 failed attempts at fiction taking up space on various hard drives and diskettes (yes, they are that old), b) despite what they tell you, you do not need to be a good writer, or a good speller to get a college degree in English, and c) I think my writing is actually decent (not that I'm biased or anything), but I never know how whatever I'm writing is going to end, which makes it difficult to finish. That is why I think my best chance to fulfill this goal is in the realm of non-fiction, or at least flirting with that line.

6- To own a beautiful 1914 edition (or older) of Elizabeth Gaskell's North and South. There was one at my college library that they actually let people borrow. I got it right before I graduated and that was the first time I've been really tempted to steal something. But I didn't. I've always loved old books, and now thanks to my experience with North and South, I intend to own it.

7- I want to live in a house with a turret. A two-story turret. And the first floor would be a library, and the top floor would be the master bedroom. Because who doesn't want to sleep in a turret? Also in this house that I will one day have will be a sewing room, and music room and a really cool play room. And (because of who I married) a home theater, which will probably not actually be attached to the house, but more like a garage, a separate garage.

I think this is So You!

Don't you hate it when people say that and then show you something that you would never be caught dead wearing/eating/doing/ect. ? Especially when said person is supposed to know you well, i.e. your mother. And sometimes it's something that would have suited you much better 5 years ago. Which just makes the whole situation more sad because either you haven't kept in good enough contact with your friend over the years, or your mother/family member hasn't noticed the changes in you over the past few years. Either scenario isn't pleasant. And then it puts you in such an awkward situation, at least if your me and not at all forthright on your emotional responses or opinions on things. Do you smile and just say "thanks", and then bury (either metaphorically or literally) whatever they give you? Or do you find some polite way to say, "sorry, that's so not me"? Oh the lose-lose situations we get ourselves into. Because who wants to turn away a gift? Especially when it's not for a special occasion. How often do those come around? And the person was thinking of you, you don't want to discourage that kind of behavior.

Anyway, these are the life dilemmas I think about. And this hasn't even happened to me in awhile.

I might have changed my mind

But hey, it's a woman's prerogative, right?

It's about the movie about my life, specifically the starring role and the casting thereof. While Joan Cusack is a good choice, and has beaten out the likes of Gweneth Paltrow, and Cate Blanchet both of whom would do a very good job, I think. But my new contender for Joan's job is Uma Thurman. Not only is she very like me physically, besides the blond hair (she's even my height) but she's done some quirky stuff. And she can do the Tara dance quite accurately. That's impressive. So I haven't made up my mind to change yet, but I could . . .

New Picture

There is now a new picture of me on my profile. . . . Okay, so it's not really me, but it's Joan Cusack who would play me in a movie about myself, so it's pretty much me.

P.S. That's a really good question to ask people, and to know yourself - "who would play you in a movie about yourself"

P.P.S. I'm still fielding awesome 80's favorites. Hint Hint. Any comment section will do.

80's Poll

So, I put together this awesome best-of 80's CD for my wedding, and now I'm ready to put together part 2, and I'm interested to know what all 5 of you readers think the best 80's songs are. I'll tell you what's on part 1 so I won't have to get tons of duplicates.

Video Killed the Radio Star - The Buggles --- (Sadly, I found out this song shouldn't really qualify since it came out in 1979 *sniff* so sad.)
Sweet Dreams - The Eurithmics
Take On Me - A-Ha
Material Girl - Madonna
Rosanna - Toto
Africa - Toto
Down Under - Men at Work
Safety Dance - Men Without Hats
Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough - Michael Jackson
Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go - Wham
500 Miles - The Proclamers
Friday I'm in Love - The Cure
Tainted Love - Soft Cell
Always Something There to Remind Me - Naked Eyes

There's probably one more, but I can't remember. Anyway, which 80's songs are your favorite?

My nemesis

My nemesis is American Fork. Maybe not the whole city, but definitely the court house. It's one of the big reasons why I have decided I can never live in Utah County. Every time I have to file something there for work, no matter what time I leave, I can barely make it down there by 5. In fact, sometimes I don't make it down in time at all, the court house taunts me as I show up at 5:05 and the doors are locked, and the night guards talk to me like I'm stupid when I ask about an after-hours drop box . . . Grrr. In fact, one time, I had to drive down to American Fork three days in a row because that's how long it takes to file ONE DOCUMENT.

Ask me to go to Provo, fine, no problem. I'll get there and back in no time at all, but mention American Fork and six people will get in major accidents in the freeway and the rest of the valley will decide to leave work early and cause the biggest traffic jam ever conceived by a perfectly malicious city court building. This building is clearly evil, and out to get me. And yet, there's no real way to avoid it. Don't worry, somehow I will stop the insanity.

New Addition to the bad movie list

As I forewarned, due to more experience and contemplation, I have an adjustment to the top 10 worst movies list--a new addition, if you will. The movie: Night of the Comet.

Now I know most of you have probably never heard of this movie, so before I rant, a history lesson. First, my history with this film. I heard about this movie from my morning radio show. They were talking about a Maxim top 10 best worst films ever. They agreed with the films on the list and were composing their own, but every caller that called in to help with this mentioned a different good bad movie. One of the ones mentioned was Night of the Comet. This means that before I saw this film I knew it would be bad. I just thought it'd be a better bad movie than it was. Second, some history of the film itself. It was made in 1984 (so was I!), and as we all know, some 80's movies age better than others. This one acutally didn't do so bad in that field. Not too many out of date jokes and the clothing's coming back in, I hear (which is just gross if you ask me). It was also the second PG-13 movie ever. (The first is Red Dawn, another bad one I hear.)Yes, they created the category just for bad films, it would seem. (Actually Steven Spielberg pushed for it because of the violence of Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, and Gremlins.) So log that one away in case you're ever on Jeopardy. And now for the rant:

This film is bad. Really bad. As in, if I hadn't have been watching it with someone else, I would have either fallen asleep, which I never do while watching a movie unless I put the movie in expressly to do so, or turned it off, which I also rarely do. The main reason--other than the irrational fear and unexplainable science behind a comet vaporizing people--is the complete and utter lack of plot. It wants to have a plot, it even tries to twist the fragments of a storyline in the hopes of masking the lack of plot or creating a plot to twist (note: it is much better to create a plot before twisting it, as opposed to during or after). Several times during this movie random things happen that are completely unexplained, like why are there zombies in the mall, and why are they teenage boys? But as a redeeming quality, you do get to see two valley girls kick butt. And for those of you who are going to run out to Hollywood Video to see this film-and I know there will be some of you-if any of you are Trekkies, look for Chakotay from Star Trek Voyager.

This film is the new #9 on my list, ousting Fear Dot Com-which I don't really remember much anyway, but let's face it, is so bad that I'm not planning on remedying that. It's number 9 because unlike so many films on this list, it isn't really trying to be good and failing miserably, it just is what it is and doesn't take itself too seriously. In fact, for some of you, this movie could be deliciously bad, one that you can watch over and over again when you just need that bad movie fix, and we all do sometimes. So for those of you who don't like to click on links, the new list looks like this:

#1-Just a Walk in the Park
#2-I Love Trouble
#3-Star Wars II: Revenge of the Sith
#4-Star Wars I: The Phantom Menace
#5-Autumn in New York
#6-Election
#7-The remake of The Music Man
#8-The Home Teachers
#9-Night of the Comet
#10-America's Sweethearts

As always, this list is subject to change with notice at any time.

TGIF

I know it's not Friday, but I had such a good Friday that I didn't have time to post this then.

I was really grateful for Friday this last week. Mostly because it came after 2 Wednesdays in a row. I know, the injustice of the world. And say what you will about Mondays, and they are bad, but Wednesdays are the worst day of the week, hands down. Not only do they have the I-don't-want-to-be-here feeling of Mondays and the this-should-really-be-a-weekend jive, but the reality of the fact that there are two whole days before you reach a weekend, and that you only have those two days to get done everything in the works for the week. It is on Wednesday that those Procrastination Bug bites really start to sting.

So the fact that I had two Wednesdays and a very real Monday last week made Friday pretty much the best day ever--although there was one damper . . . 2 pm traffic. 2PM traffic! People, what are you all doing driving at 2Pm on a Friday?! I hope you were all going home early. And as much as I hate traffic (and I do, it's the bane of my existance), even that was barely a damper on my day.

Stupid Rational Head Voices!

So my sister-in-law sent me this link awhile ago http://www.dressaday.com/dressaday.html and the other day I finally had enough time to start going through the archives and devote the proper amount of attention to it and for several days now it has amused and entertained me (my sister-in-law knows me so well). Not only has it justified my overwhelming urge to turn any material I have into a skirt and/or dress, but it has also instilled in me an almost irresistable desire to do so immediately.

I haven't because the large, irritatingly logical voice in my head keeps asking me in this annoyingly persistant, completely calm voice "with what time?" And as per usual, the voice is right. We are in the middle of a remodel mess and I don't even have my sewing stuff in the house because the office is overcrowded as it is and the basement scares me. So even if I did have the time, I don't have the equipment. But someday . . . yes someday . . .

In the meantime, enjoy this clip that made me laugh everytime I watched it yesterday (which was four times, at least) and as dressaday Erin says, "If you don't feel joy upon seeing this you might need a joy recalibration. See your doctor." http://www.albinoblacksheep.com/flash/fold.php.

What happens outside of Vegas is fair game

So, I went to Vegas last weekend to see my new nephew blessed. It was nice to hang out with the fam and watch the guys play Guitar Hero for 8 hours on Saturday, but since that was in Vegas, I can't say much about that. However, the car trouble we had on the way home is fair game.

A few weeks ago, Johnny's car overheated on his way to school. The culpret-a split hose. So when we took his car to Vegas (mine can't go over 75 mph and is much dirtier than this picture)
Johnny brought some duck tape in case we needed a quick fix. Well, we did. The car overheated about 40 miles from Mesquite. Luckily, Johnny's fam was traveling behind us and pulled over with us and helped us find the problem. They duck taped the split hose and we went another 20 miles before overheating again. Apparently the "temporary" part of 'temporary fix' was shorter than we'd hoped. So, we put more water in the radiator and turned up the heat all the way and drove slower and made it to Mesquite. Barely. We started overheating on the exit. So we found a Smith's parking lot that attached to a gas station and bought some more water (we figured it was definitely an ox-in-the-mire situation and thus not a huge Sabbath Day violation) and asked in the gas station if there were any mechanics open at 9 pm on a Sunday. The attendant made a call, and we had ourselves an appointment. So a large, anti-social mechanic named Larry fixed us up and we were on our way. We got into St. George around 10:30, a mere 4 hours since we'd left Vegas.
At this point I realized that going to work in the morning was probably not a wise idea since I have to drive for a living. Even so, I took advantage of the darkness and took a little nap. At 1 am Johnny woke me up to help keep him awake and we made it to Nephi 1/2 hour later. We walked around, woke up a little, and were still naively optimistic on getting home by 2:30. We would have been close to accurate had we not been pulled over at 2:20 AM by a state trooper merely to have him tell us that he was writing us a warning for our headlight that has been out for a year and a half (that was the first time anyone had pulled us over for that). So we didn't get home until after 3 and then I insisted that we unload the car before we hit the hay because when my sister came to check on the house and the cat that weekend she informed me that our back door was unlocked. So I was still a little freaked out by that potentially close call. I wasn't about to leave anything inticing in our car to attract people with bad intentions. So I didn't get to sleep until around 4 probably.
I did not go to work Monday morning, and after this huge ordeal I will say that we should always have half days on Monday. I was so happy, and Monday's are usually my second worst day of the week. So I guess that's the moral of the story: half-day Mondays!

PG-13 Traffic

So I was driving to Lehi the other morning for work (and can I just say, mid-morning drivers are such a different breed from drivers every other time of day. Apparently between 9-11 AM people actually go the speed limit on the freeway, in multiple lanes, and going 60 in the slow lane was acceptable. It was another moment in the Twilight Zone for me I guess.) and while I was on 5th S., a one-way freeway-entrance street, I was stopped at a green light. Yes, a GREEN light. Now this isn't exceptionally unusual when there is bad traffic, which there wasn't. So why was I stopped at a green light, you ask? Well, there was a homeless man on crutches who decided to cross the street during that green light, causing all of us to wait. Now, the man was on crutches and obviously had a hard time getting around, and was rather old, so I'm not really upset about that, and I didn't mind waiting until he stopped to pick something up and bent over revealing a good half of his butt. Yes, the man was wearing no underwear and didn't have a problem showing a good part of Salt Lake traffic his old, saggy butt. I looked away, but not before I got an all too good look. I only hope that the other side of traffic didn't a rated R view. And all the while I'm sitting there averting my eyes, I keep thinking, if I had just gone the way I normally do to get home from work, instead of taking this road, I could have avoided this whole scene. But then again, I wouldn't have known that I was avoiding anything and then what would I blog about? So I gues the moral of the story is don't be upset the next time your stuck in traffic. You might be missing a really ugly streaker flashing another road.

Stupid Human Tricks

No, not the stuff on late night talk shows, but the tricks the stupid human inside me likes to play. For example, this one time, I was driving to Magna, and I decided to take the long way, I-80. Well after successfully fulfilling my purpose in Magna, I get back on SR201 to get onto to I-80. I turn onto the street that leads to I-80 West (the way I need to go) and think, I don't need to go WEST, I need to go EAST. Yeah, no idea where this stupid person comes from. So I get onto I-80 and immediately realize that I've been tricked. So I turn around in Tooele, but the on ramp for the freeway isn't an easy turn away from the offramp like every other exit. Oh no, I have to go down another SR and then make a left, turn around, then backtrack to the freeway.

And then another time, I was going to Magna, and I took the short way this time, I-215 to SR201. Get done, get back on SR201 and head back to work. I see the 215 exits and think, ok, I have to go NORTH to get back to work. Then immediately merge into the southbound exit. Why? because the stupid person inside my head freaked out and tricked me. So after much stress (yet another exit that's not normal, the onramp for the Northbound is a right turn after you exit . . . not cool) I finally got onto I-15 and went back.

So I thought maybe the stupid person just didn't like Magna for whatever reason because I hadn't seen or heard from him in awhile (yes, he's male because that makes sense), but then he struck again. This time it was at the court house. I was filing some documents. This is not a hard task. There's a date stamp and you stamp the original, put it in the basket, stamp the copy and take that back. To make it even easier, the originals are papercliped and the copies are stapled, so you don't get confused. (Yes, a monkey could do my job, but don't worry, I'm working on making myself indispensible.) I did this with 5 documents, then walked back to work. When I gave them to the assistant who needed them, I noticed a paperclip. Yes, I had stamped an original and taken it back with me. So I had to walk back to the court just to drop off a paper in a basket. My life would be so much easier without the stupid man inside of me. Luckily it was a nice day.

But I think I've figured out the problem. I spend hours somedays doing ridiculously menial tasks like taking out staples, copying, scaning, and 3-hole punching, which is what I was doing yesterday. I think this results in a serious lack of brain cells in a particular section of my brain that has turned into Stupid Man. He rears his ugly head when the rest of my brain takes a vacation to escape the boredom. I'm going to have to cut back on vacation time, for my own sake.

March puts the 'run' in runner

I guess this month is very appropriately named because I have been marching all around the valley. I guess I can just assume that even though it doesn't look like I'll be busy in the mornings, I really will because it couldn't really be March if I'm not running. And I am after all, a runner.

Last Week

As promised, I will tell you about the oddity that was last week.

So, it started off with a Monday, that was so crazy and busy that it felt remarkably like a Friday--not one of those hooray-it's-Friday type Fridays, but one of those I-really-need-a-weekend-NOW Fridays. Not good on a Monday because as we all know, Monday's aren't the greatest day's anyway mainly because it's the beginning of the sometimes very long work week. So instead of getting a weekend after this Friday-feeling Monday, I get a Tuesday.

Now Tuesday was really dead, and somewhat boring, and oddly enough felt a little like a Friday just because it was so dull. Only a week that has run itself out could feel like that. Yet, it was only Tuesday.

For various other reasons, both Wednesday and Thursday felt like Friday's also. And by the time Thursday hit, I was so confused that I actually started seriously thinking that it was Friday. The other days of the week, I maintained my sanity and could at least identify the actually day, but not on Thursday. So convinced was I, that I went home expecting a weekend.

Needless to say, the REAL Friday wasn't very fun to wake up to. And to make matters worse, the whole day--the one day the should legitimately feel Friday-esque--felt like a WEDNESDAY! Now that's not even fair. Wednesdays are the worst day of the week, followed by Monday as a close second.

So it wasn't the best week last week, and it wasn't even my fault.

9 to 5 3/4?

Whatever happened to working until six meaning actually working until six and THEN leaving? I left work at 5:45 PM yesterday--late by the way because work was crazy (but more on that later)--and it was like a ghost town in my building. The receptionist left with me, odd since we are open from 8-6 everyday, the company I pass on my way to the parking garage had it's lights off and looked abandoned (but I really don't know what their deal is since no one was there when I got in this morning either. They must have a really wierd schedule), and the woman in the parking booth was gone and the arms were up . . . this is at least five minutes before they used to be up (we just switched parking companies). And hardly anyone was on the roads. Was there something going on yesterday that I didn't know about? Maybe since the Office was a rerun. Why would they rerun the Office for no good reason? But I digress . . . it was a Thursday, people! I can only assume that I was having one of my random jumps into the Twilight Zone which happen occasionally yet continue to freak me out. As this blog clearly indicates.

My faux desk

So my latest greatest thing at work is my faux desk.
Please note, this is not an actual picture of my desk.
I decided to adopt my faux desk because my co-worker had just been reassigned over to a lonely side of the office in a corner all by herself. This was not a punishment, but I thought that going from being around three people all the time, to being by herself would be sad. So I went to sit by her in Christy Corner (name has been changed). I soon thereafter got involved in a project that required counterspace, and so have now clamed my faux desk as my own.
Why is this a faux desk and not the real thing, you ask? Well, I don't have a computer, for one thing, a real desk requirement. My office supplies consist of a highlighter, a pen, a box of tissues, and some paper clips. But the biggest reason of all, is that the chair I borrowed to sit on only has 4 1/2 wheels.
So even though I have a faux desk, at least I can muster up a little sense of belonging. And most importantly have a place to deposit my stuff that's not in everyone's way.

Had a Bad Day

So I had a bad day the other day. Not that anything physically bad happened, like no one ran into me, I didn't have impossible things to get done at work, though it did get mildly stressful. But for some reason, I just didn't feel good emotionally. It was one of those days where your faults appear as 500 lbs sumo wrestlers and stand in front of you intimidatingly all day. They're very hard to see around when that happens.

The next day, of course, was a fabulous day. I felt good, I couldn't stop smiling, things went well at work. In fact, someone I was helping at the front desk told me I had a very nice smile and I must cheer everyone up. I said thank you of course because not accepting complements is one of my pet peeves, but I thought, why couldn't someone have said this yesterday? Then again, if someone had said that on a bad day, I would have said thank you, but I wouldn't have believed it.

Why do girls refuse to believe anything good about themselves?

What happened to the cookies?

Have you ever set out a stack of cookies to help you get through a particularly mind-numbing, or generally boring task? Then as you eat the cookies, you don't really pay attention to the sugary goodness, just feel the benefits of the sugar rush and notice the after-taste makes you want more cookies. So you look over and see that you have one cookie left. And instead of taking the time to enjoy this last cookie, you eat it in the same take-things-for-granted-can't-think-because-my-mind-is-numb way. Then when the after-taste hits, which it always does, your ten-second attention span has expired and you ask yourself "where did my last cookie go? It was here a second ago?" Man, I hate taking out staples!!

P.S. I have decided after an overpowering response from 1/5 of my viewers to not give up chocolate for Lent because I would not be able to make it through work, or a day at my in-laws. I am instead ceasing to cross my legs. Silly you say? Well not for me. I discovered in high school that my bad knees were aggrevated by my leg-crossing, not to mention that dancing-that gave me the bad knees in the first place-was also affected, since leg-crossing kills turn out. I don't have much of that, and I'd like to presearve what I have. Also it can give you vericose veins as time marches on, and yuck, let's be honest. So after successfully giving it up in high school only to be foiled later on by playing a hoochie in Paint Your Wagon (how come our wrestling match isn't on your top ten list, Mo?), I have once again decided to give up the habit. So you can join in the laughter and confusion with my co-workers who I'm sure have been forced to get creative in order to explain away my random leg spasms as I go to cross my legs and then have to jerk them away from each other.

Mardi Gras

So it took awhile for me to post again, I know, but work got crazy and then Blogger shut me out. So I had to get a new password. Anyway, I'm back. And Mardi Gras snuck up on me this year.

Last year my friend had a party, seeing as she's from New Orleans, so I was up on the festivities. This year, it seems way too early, and I haven't decided what to give up for Lent yet. Last year I gave up stress. It was really good for me actually, though my grades kind of suffered-not too drastically of course, but stress is a good motivator. But it had been affecting me physically, so I decided to give it up. And then, after Lent was over, I found out I had Sunday's off. I could have been stressed all those Sundays and I missed the opportunity. So sad. Anyway, this year there doesn't seem to be anything decent to give up that will actually help me in some way. It's a good time to break a habit, but eating and driving don't seem to be things I can live without at this point. Not that driving is a habit, but I don't like doing it and I'd give it up if I could. Sadly, I get paid to do it, so I can't. Anyway, any good ideas, I'm down with.

Fun While You Wait

While all 5 of you who read this blog wait with baited breath for me to post more pictures of my kitty (which I will), overcome my cold (which I hope I will), and say something cleaver (which is just inevitable). I will leave you with something fun to do.

http://www.jokesandhumor.com/tests/celebrity-love-match/

My internet celebrity boyfriend is Edward Norton, which is good since I already like him. (My alternates were Morgan Freeman, Tommy Lee Jones, and Bruce Springsteen if anyone cares.) It's great, but you HAVE to be honest. Promise? Then go have fun.

Vegas

So to escape the insane cold last weekend, Johnny and I went down to Vegas, where it was only in the 30's. It didn't really feel warm, per say, but it did feel normal. And it was a fun trip. We went shopping-I got a new pair of shoes, we walked around on the strip and took in all the glorious and ridiculous excess that is the hotels there, and we saw a show at the Excaliber, where I also bought a really fun book about baths, yes baths, it has recipes for all sorts of baths depending on your moods and even shows you how to make bubble bath or bath salts or the fuzzy balls. Fun stuff. Come on, a book that features an Act-Your-Shoe-Size Bath is a keeper. I'll post excerpts if anyone's really interested.

PS. Apparently Las Vegas is sponsored by Pepsi, at least the strip is. Wierd.

Mouthing the Words to the Sore Throat Blues

Get it? cause I can't sing the blues cause I can't sing . . . ?

Well, anyway, I got this sore throat really suddenly Sunday night. And it was still there with a vengence when I woke up at 3 in the morning on Monday, and when I woke up for work on Monday. It got a little better by that night. Then Tuesday, my throat was okay--still not in singing shape--but I started feeling stuffy and my nose would spontaniously start to drain, not fun. And by Tuesday night I could really hear because my ears were blocked internally by stuff I don't want to think about.

And now today, my voice has deteriorated, which makes answering phones a lot of fun, (it's hard to fake for long periods of time, so I'm glad I just answer the phones and then pass people on) and I'm congested and I still can't hear!

Isn't winter fun?

Meet Guido

See, he's cute, isn't he?

The Story of Guido

It begins with a very naughty cat who got into the fireplace . . . again . . .

So as punishment, and because he was very dirty, Guido got a bath.

As his punky appearance and angry stare would suggest, Guido wasn't so happy about his bath. Sadly, his unhappiness had consequences. In his rage, he got Johnny with his claws.

Believe me, it's worse than it looks. . . So to prevent anything like this from happening in the future, Johnny turned the fireplace into a condemned house.

Tara's Anti-smoking Ad

As if the inevitability of lung cancer and the fact that you are inhaling tar isn't enough to keep you away, consider the financial investment smoking is. Have you ever noticed how expensive cigarette packs are? It's quite ridiculous, especially when you consider how much it will cost for medical bills for that hacking cough and the amputation of your vocal cords, and the dental bills to whiten up those stained pearly whites.

Then there are the social costs. The gross smell emanating from your clothes and your house keep the suitors away. And I can't imagine kissing a smoker--gross! Then there's the laws passed that alienate you from non-smokers condemning you to little glass rooms in airports where people can stare and shake their heads in disgust. And when you need a smoking break, which you will, you have to go to cold, dirty parking garages possibly risking your life (I know how people drive), or street corners outside the building, giving off the appearance of loiters or solicitors.

Then there's the just plain inconvenience of it all. Having to take three or four breaks a day to grab a smoke, being forced outside in all sorts of weather. Then for those who smoke while driving (and there's an alarming amount in Salt Lake who do this) it doesn't matter if it's 13 degrees outside and snowing, you have to drive with the window down. This fact alone would keep me from ever smoking. I value the heat in my car more than anything else (granted heat is about the only thing going for it as far as vanity and convenience is concerned). And imagine how bad it would be to have to have the window rolled down in the summer and suffering the hot wind blowing on your frying arm that stuck out the window. (I have a little taste of this since my black car doesn't have air conditioning.)

So if scary or funny commercials just aren't cutting it, consider the practical side of things and DON'T SMOKE. I will admit I have somewhat of a personal interest in this topic since the second-hand smoke I inhale could shorten my lifespan, too. And anyone who smokes and has a family, think of the children, and your spouse for that matter.

That is all.

Location, location, location

So, I'll admit, I wasn't overly thrilled to be living in Kearns because it has such a bad rap as being dangerous. Some of which is earned since questionable kids walk by my house on the way to school, and spray painting on fences is common, and this one time, when we got new carpet, I went to the park to use the bathroom because the one that we have in our house had carpet pieces propping it open and I have many issues regarding doors and bathrooms. . . anyway I totally got freaked out in the park by a bunch of kids who should have been in school who looked like a gang.

Well, despite all this, the more I live in my house, the more I realize that we are ridiculously close to anything we could ever need. We are right next to Jordan Landing, and the big shopping center on Redwood. There are fast food and restaurants all close by. Many a Walmart and Reams and Smiths are in the neighborhood. There's even a Home Depot I discovered the other day. Pretty much everyday that I drive home I see something else cool right down the street. There's a dollar movie down the road. It never ends. Talk about prime real estate. Nice.

Announcement (no I'm not pregnant)

But we do have a new addition-- we got a cat. A really cute orange and white male cat named Guido--as in the movie Cars. (Good show if you haven't seen it.) I was going to post this a few weeks ago when we got him, but had some picture difficulties, so expect some pics soon. He was sick when we got him from the Humane Society, so we didn't fully realize how strange he was, but it turns out he's crazy enough to fit right in. He loves people, the bathtub, and apparently, now the fireplace too. If he gets soot on my carpet, I will join Morgan and throw him out the window. I'm sure he wouldn't mind, he's been eyeing the snow and he'd land on his feet, so I might have to find another form of punishment. I'd totally lock him in the basement if I could, but the stairs have no door, so I'm stuck.

Anyway, more to come on that later.

And PS, not one single mouse problem since he arrived, yeah!
